   
Cape Barren Estate, although a small winery, is rapidly acheiving a reputation for super-premium to icon quality Shiraz wines produced from their vineyard in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Their Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz has a following of devotees in the niche, up-market restaurant trade in the eastern states of Australia.
Cape Barren owners Brian Ledgard and Peter Matthews have 150 acres of vineyards in McLaren Vale and their vineyard at Blewitt Springs was the source for several icon McLaren Vale wines during the 1990’s. In 1999 Peter and Brian opened Cape Barren Wines to selectively use their own vineyard resources to create their icon wine – the Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz.
The Old Vine Shiraz is the flagship of the entire Cape Barren range. This wine, sourced from their 70 year old vines is from a single vineyard (“The Springs”) and represents the epitome of McLaren Vale Shiraz. The 2002 Old Vine Shiraz was awarded 2 Gold Medals and a National Trophy and consequently sold out very quickly. The 2003 Old Vine Shiraz has already won a Silver Medal at the McLaren Vale Wine Show.
Riding the crest of success, they have now extended their offerings to include other quality wines such as the 2004 Wild Goose Shiraz and the 2004 GSM (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre), all made from McLaren Vale grown grapes.
Brian Ledgard is a third generation grape grower and his experience and careful viticulture ensures the consistent supply of top quality fruit to their winery. This allows Brian Light, their internationally acclaimed winemaker to craft premium quality, well-structured and balanced wines.
Cape Barren Estate will always be a McLaren Vale focused producer aiming at super-premium and icon class wines. Whilst Brian and Peter have the capacity to make over 60,000 cases of wine they purposely restrict production to craft showcase wines expressing the finest qualities of the unique flavours and textures of McLaren Vale.
